Long term Solution to Corruption

The current uproar against Corruption and Anna Hazare’s fast for Jan Lokpal Bill, got us thinking….

Would a person passionate about her/his work or job indulge in corruption. Before you jump the gun and say anyone can be corrupt and there are enough reasons for one to be, spare this thought!!!

Anyone who enjoys what she or he does, respects the work and feels content doing it, will be oblivious from the thought of getting any extra benefit out of their work.  A good doctor, will rarely demand bribes, an honest judge is often the person passionate about law and possesses deep knowledge, An IAS officer with the dream of development in his eyes will not wear glasses of corruption.

Build a man of Character and the ills of society will fade away’

As we fight against corruption, look at the long term solution, a society with people with a vocation of their interest and choice, will be efficient, happier and satisfied and less likely to be corrupt.

Lets create an enabling environment for choosing a fulfilling career and check corruption.

Entrance Tests no more…

In an era of intense competition, there are always students and parents vying to be in the most prestigious school. Parent interviews, recommendations, donations to school have been some of the ways the so-called ‘prestigious’ schools have been employing to select the most ‘deserving students’. Sensing commercial opportunities, schools initiated the practice of selling application forms and conducting entrance tests obviously for a fee. The trend caught on and many schools started their own entrance tests or scholarships tests. This resulted in further financial and more so mental pressure for the parents and students undergoing anxiety for something as elementary as admission into a school. Even primary school admission process included this practice further burdening the tired minds of students.

These practices have been being opposed now and then; finally, the efforts of Balasangham, a non-governmental organisation working for child development seem to have paid off. The petition it has filed with the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) triggered a knee-jerk reaction from the officials of the Secondary Education department who have banned the use of Entrance tests as a part of admission process by the private schools in Andhra Pradesh.

The Department of School Education on Saturday furthered up their actions by warning the corporate schools that they shall be “de-recognised” if they went ahead with admissions tests. This decision has forced several corporate institutions to put their admission tests on hold for the time being. Sri Chaitanya Group has decided to put off its yearly ‘scholarship test,’ which has been scheduled for Sunday, February 13th. This scholarship test for admissions into classed VI to X has been well-publicized for the past one month and offered among other exciting prizes, free education for up to seven years to meritorious students. The managements of corporate schools are planning to file a petition in the AP High Court, challenging the orders of the government banning tests. Their contention is that they were conducting not admission tests, but only ‘scholarship tests’ to award scholarships and free education to meritorious students based on their exam performances. Inspite of such benefits being provided to the students, the detractors seem to have taken strict offense towards the fee being collected for the admission tests although they are being branded ‘free’. Also the fact that the students might be lured for admissions through gifts such as digital cameras, IPods and fancy electronic gadgets resulted in the need for the government to put its foot down on such activities.

While it is difficult for the common man and the countless aspirants to merit the points put up by both sides, this has brought in front, a very important issue that needs to be addressed. It has to be verified whether the scholarships and other benefits given to the meritorious students in these exams are a philanthropic gesture by the institutions or a mass cover-up of an underlying money-making activity. Nothing can be said, at this point of time. All we can do is hope that these entrance tests are not a part of the business, thus pulling a partly messed up education culture in our state further down.

A new Address..

Finally After days of Procrastination and contemplation, we finally move our blog to our own Domain. With renewed vigor and a promise to write more often we bid goodbye to ordell-thinks.blogspot.com to say hello to blog.ordelledu.com

We sincerely hope that you all may continue to appreciate our platform Ordell-thinks where we share our views about education and career planning the way we see them..

The journey continues, milestones are emerging

“To get through the hardest journey we need to take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping” – Chinese Proverb

The journey on which Ordell has embarked is full of challenges and pitfalls. We have entered uncharted waters. We know the destination, but the path keeps revealing itself; there are multiple ways and we keep striving to find the best way forward.

We have often been questioned behind our reason to venture into career planning. While almost everyone is appreciative of the intent but there is still a long way before young students and their parents internalise the importance of it. Often, by the time one realises the importance of probing oneself to find one’s calling, it is too late to do anything about it.

The purpose behind the inception of ‘Ordell’ is not just undertaking a commercial activity and making money, but primarily to sensitise the society about the relevance of judicious career decisions. We look at ourselves as ‘game-changers’ who strive to revolutionise the way career planning is perceived and bring in a more focused and planned approach towards it.

Perceptions are hard to influence and take time to change. We are looking to influence few young minds to ignite their dreams and embark on their dream career, without us bothering too much about commercial success. Ordell wishes to stoke the fire in the young minds awakening them to the prospect of realising their potential. The nation needs a committed and happy workforce and this can only be achieved when every individual is in a position to realise the potential she or he has.

We have been taking a hard look at our strategies and with a new vigour we now intend to move ahead in the direction of our goal. We are looking forward to many path breaking initiatives coming up in future.

The immediate start will be our new E-zine. It will be a platform for us to address the young minds of our country and showcase various exciting career opportunities. This E-zine which, as of now we are planning to call ‘Youth-o-pia’ will be reader friendly and will appeal to both young students and their parents. We are gearing up for a test launch to gauge reader feedback and customise to suit the tastes of our target group.

As the year ends, we look forward to a new beginning and take the dream of ‘Ordell forward’.
Amen to a new start !!!

Fortune favours the brave and the wise

These lyrics of an unreleased Indian Ocean song perfectly depict the mental state of students at this hour. Quite a few of you are at that crucial junction in their life where they have to make important decisions like choosing a job, a course, a college, or a subject.
The future is calling out to them, it is exciting and at the same time scary. The decisions to be taken weigh down on you and confusion engulfs the surrounding. No matter how much others may try to help, it is more or less a personal battle you have to fight and win.
One needs to opt for the best and strive to achieve it, but merely hoping for the best is not a prerequisite of success. The need of the hour is to be ambitious yet grounded on earth, taking a realistic decision that is within your academic and personal capabilities.
Let not this all overwhelm you, but face it as a litmus test of your character. The latest animation flick, ‘how to train a dragon’ depicted this dilemma beautifully, where the young character is torn between the desire to prove his mettle to his Viking clan and living with his limitations.  Admirably he eventually figures out his capabilities and hones his skills becoming the savior of his clan and dragons as well.
Heroes are not just in virtual world, trust your abilities and make the right choices to embark upon a successful life.

Is there really an X-Factor

Its Make or Break Time”, Everyone around me said.
This is the most important phase of your education. Every minute decides your life that lies ahead.” added my parents.

It was July, 1999. After years of what was called Education (although I preferred to term the major part of it as ‘Cramming Up’), I was there finally. I had reached the pinnacle of my schooling system. I was into my X (10th) grade. But my arrival was greeted more by apprehension and caution than a celebration as I had expected. A hurricane of opinions from various sources advising me about how to study flooded my summer break. And all the joy of being the senior most batch of the school vanished into thin air when my school re-opened. Tenth standard was not the best part of the school, as I had thought; it turned out to be far from being the best since the horrendous task of mugging up the syllabus just reached astronomical levels. And my worst fears had come true as everyone at my school also advocated the same ideology that this was the year that decided my life. And I couldn’t see how.

What the hell!!! How can my entire life depend on how well I cram in the next one year” I thought. I had always believed that Success and Failure were parts of the journey and neither of them was the destination. This belief of mine always made me to counter the popular opinion by thinking that my tenth class performance never guaranteed a long term success or failure. But I felt like a loner in this regard. And my schedule didn’t give me a respite either. A day that consisted of Extra tuitions, special classes apart from the normal learning adding upto a study time of 14 hours was exhaustive. There was no time for rest, leave alone any recreation. It was a feeling of being abandoned on an island that consisted only of books and nothing else. But my experience of passing out of similar tests didn’t go futile and I finally completed my schooling albeit not to the expectations of my parents.

Eleven years have gone by and I look back at the impact that one year had. I look at the toppers of my school whose performances in the further examinations have taken a nose dive after the schooling and ended up in the slush of Engineering colleges… I look at a friend whose rather abysmal tenth class performance has had no bearing on his success in his Civil services examination… A classmate who realized that Math wasn’t his cup of tea and opted for Animation… A group of friends who defied the odds and got into Commercial pilot training… And I realized that the Tenth standard was one of the passing stages of the journey of one’s career path… I realized how misled everyone was…

Finally, all these years of experience of looking at countless number of students brings me to state the point that though tenth class is a very important phase of education; it can still be approached like any other class… Time still needs to be given to the student to pursue his ambitions, nurture his hobbies and allow him / her to develop as an individual…for it is the individuality which will drive the student along the career path without much friction…

The Engineering Joke

The headlines yesterday all screamed ‘bloody murder’, 14 students had cleared EAMCET while scoring a glorious Zero, the number a mighty Indian invented showing their respect for our heritage and utter disregard for the word ‘competence’.

8 out of these 14 great minds have an admission assured owing to the hardships and exploitation of their ancestors faced in the hands of so called ‘Savarnas’.

So what are we celebrating here, the fact that AP has so many engineering seats which can accommodate all kinds of nincompoops. i always thought that marks are not a true reflection of a student’s capabilities, but am stumped on this one, what does a zilch reflect.

A friend commented on my FB status that at least we have techno-literates. A fancy term but i wonder what is the true meaning of it, our literates at times can hardly write their own name, and am sure some of these techno-literates can hardly even tell the difference between AC-DC (not the rock band).

Some blame the mad rush by Parents wanting their child to become an engineer, which surely meant something respectful in their era. Sadly now it has become a bad joke, those who will never get an admission into even an outdated BSc college or even a BA one, can get admission into an engineering college. The less said about the college’s credentials, infrastructure and faculty the better. Let’s deal with one can of worms at a time.

So what do we achieve here, a large number of techno-literates? or producing quality manpower fueling our next growth phase, or financing the non-profit societies running colleges owned by Namis and Benamis or showing he world the large number of QUALIFIED Graduates we have. Make your guess or would you need phone-a-friend or Lifeline to solve this puzzle…

A New Beginning

Why now?Isn’t there already too much gyaan on education and career issues. Actually there is, So why are we rambling here.
We are?Ours is just a voice of reason trying to make sense in this myriad world. We would talk about issues related to education and career.
What not? This is not a platform to create or share ‘breaking news’ or gossip. This is not to advocate any course or college.  This is not to advertise anything.
Why this? The fact remains that Education is important and ideas to improve its state need to be generated and shared. There is focus on education but the pace of reform is slow and systemic change needs commitment.
Well…We initiate a new beginning, an Ordell of reason and optimism, hope you all enjoy our new blog.
Welcome!!!!

RTE Act ready, but what about action?

The Act may be ready, but what about the infrastructure to set the Act in motion? With the Right To Education (RTE) Act coming into effect, Karnataka, like a few other states, has a few challenges. To begin with, the state needs to recruit 20,000 to 50,000 teachers, which is the same for Haryana and Punjab.

A meeting of state education secretaries early this year revealed that 5.1 lakh teachers are required to meet the Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) provided under the RTE Act. “There are 5.3 lakh vacancies under state budgets, which states will need to fill expeditiously. Under teacher posts already sanctioned under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), there is a balance of 2.25 lakh teachers to be recruited,’’ the meeting report stated.

Basic amenities is another issue that Karnataka needs to look at. For instance, it requires 35,000 to 50,000 toilets only for girls. Overall, 7 lakh toilets for girls are required. The highest requirement is in Bihar with 90,000, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 63,000, and Odisha 54,000.

Another is providing adequate drinking water in schools. Nearly 4.3 lakh schools require drinking water in the country. The highest requirement — over 10,000 schools — is in Karnataka.

What comes as a relief is that the RTE Act ensures that teachers will not be burdened by non-academic duties, though it has high expectations of teachers. This includes full involvement with the functioning of SMCs (school management committees) and accountability towards the “local authority” regarding rights of children. Importantly, ensuring there is no corporal punishment, harassment and no detention. The meeting discussed having a system in place for rational and transparent postings and transfers. Special circumstances of women teachers will be considered.

FUNCTIONING OF RTE
It was highlighted that states need to formulate a policy on opening schools and incorporating appropriate distance norms so that all children have access to a neighbourhood school. The states may have to undertake physical and social mapping of all habitations, link habitations to specific schools, as also address social, cultural and physical barriers to enrolment and participation. Special training to be provided for mainstreaming out-of-school children into age-appropriate classes in regular elementary schools.

AGE-APPROPRIATION ADMISSION
Identification of out-of-school children will be done through social mapping. Admission will include formal enrolment of children and special training, ranging anywhere from three months to two years to enable them to cope with age-appropriate class. The curriculum and material prepared for these children will not merely focus on the 3Rs but also on life skills, which would need to be prepared by a specially-constituted group. After special training, children would be inducted into formal school and supported in academic and emotional integration into the school system.

GIRLS’ EDUCATION
Girls from disadvantaged communities form the bulk of out-of-school children. Training and academic support to be given for classroom processes that are gender sensitive, non-discriminatory, free of corporal punishment and mental harassment.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Incorporating child friendly elements and ensuring barrier-free access to schools must be taken up on priority. Old, weak and structurally unsafe school buildings should be appropriately repaired/reconstructed. Structural safety features should be built into new school building design, retrofitting of existing buildings located in high-risk seismic zones. Drinking water and sanitation facilities in schools should be ensured.

NO CLARITY ON FUNDING
RG Nadadur, principal secretary, Karnataka, had stated at the meeting that there was no clarity at the state level pertaining to the modality of funding under the RTE Act. “There are two different voices being heard — the state finance department is of the view that funds will flow from the treasury, whereas the education department wants the fund to flow through State Society Mode.”
